비커밍 제인_Becoming Jane : 무엇이 청춘의 연애를 훼방놓는가!

여자가 아니라서 그런지
아니면 여성적 감수성에 대한 훈련이 안되있어선지는 잘 모르겠으나 나에게 순정만화와 여자가 쓴 로맨스소설들은 정말 읽기 힘들다.
시대의 고전이 되었다면 분명 성적인 차이를 뛰어넘는 문학적 통찰력이 깔려있을 것임에도 불구하고 학창시절에 오만과 편견을 몇번 읽기를 시도하다 포기했을 정도니...

그러던 제인 오스틴을 재발견할 수 있게 만든 건 아무래도 워킹 타이틀의 공로로 돌려 마땅하다.  비록 원작은 오스틴 것이 아니지만 오스틴의 세계관에 흠뻑 젖어있는 브리짓 존스의 일기를  보고 나서야 비로서 오스틴 원작의 영화를 볼 용기가 생겼으니 말이다.

거기다 이제 제인 오스틴 자체를 다룬다니...
아직 그녀의 소설들을 읽지 않은 주제로는 말하기 면구스럽지만 원작 영화들을 본 깜냥만으로 말한다면 비커밍 제인은 제인 오스틴 세계관의 집적체 그 자체랄 수 있다.

그 세계관이야 단순하게 표현하면 좀 신파적이기까지 하다.
여성의 관점으로 본
돈과 안정이냐 사랑과 불안이냐

이거 현실적으로 논한다면 너무 흔하고 쉬운 답인 동시에 문학적 양심으로 보자면 설득하기 참 녹록치 않은...아니 어쩌면 거의 불가능에 가까운 난제다.

제인 오스틴 세계관의 독보적인 점은 이 간단하지만 난해한 문제가 왜 일어나는 지에 대한 사회경제학적 묘사가 뛰어나다는 점이라고 본다.
그것도 대단한 현학적 분석이 아니라 독자로 하여금 어떤 놈을 골라야 하는가를 치밀히 드라이브하는 순정만화틱한 나레이션으로 말이다.

거참 재밌지 않는가?
남자의 로맨스물들은 대게 내 사랑 그녀에게 바치는 남자의 순정 이야기가 주류다.
그런데 여자들의 로맨스는 어느 놈을 골라야 하는가가 대부분이다.
여자들이 좀 더 이기적인 거 아니냐고? 천만에
동물의 왕국 짝짓기 질서와 무엇이 다른가?
이 고차원적 로망도 사실 동물적 본능을 결코 넘어서지 못하는 갈등이라는 것.

연애의 목적을 규정하는 가장 무의식적인 차원은 섹스와 양육일터이고 좀 더 의식적으로 가면 조건에 바탕을 둔 고르기 시합일 터이고 좀 더 초월적으로 가면 이상적 사랑을 위해서가 아니겠는가. 그런데...
문제는 연애의 완성형이 사랑이 아니라는데서 모든 문제와 갈등이 싹텄으리라...
연애는 섹스와 양육이자 보다 훌륭한 선택이자 감성적 만족을 주는 사랑 모두 일터...마치 삼위일체론 같이 말이다.
삼위일체가 되지 못하면 모자른 곳부터 삐걱거리고 불행을 잉태하고 파국을 치달을 수 밖에 없다. 하지만 과연...어느 누가 삼위일체를 완벽히 갖추는 연애를 할 수 있나.

먹고 살 걱정 없는 밀림의 원시 공동체를 제외한다면 모든 인간의 사회구조는 이 삼위일체를 방해하게끔 되어있다.
바로 이 불균형...가족과 사회와 경제와 관습이 만들어 내는 삼위일체의 훼방으로 인한 선택의 고통을 묘사한 것이 제인 오스틴의 세계관...
그 뛰어난 묘사력이 단순한 남자 고르기 판타지를 뛰어넘게 해준 차이겠다.

에잇 현실에서 안되니까 글로 풀자...마치 사마천같다.


비록 영화에서의 선택은 그 모든 고통이 자아실현의 동기이자 목적이라는 다소 원시 페미니즘적 틀을 보여주긴 하지만, 남녀를 불문하고 우리의 연애를 훼방 놓는 근원들이 무엇이었는 지를 좀 솔직히 돌아볼 수 있는 계기를 주기에는 충분하다.
